First Impressions: Seitokai no Ichizon
October 8, 2009I guess from the onset, this was meant to be a parody / gag anime, judging from the source material. From the very start of the episode, they already break the fourth wall and make no qualms as to how the mood of the series will be – lighthearted and fun. Quite a number of references and jokes are made, many of which are at a certain animation studio’s expense, and they naturally don’t stop there, poking fun Higurashi/Umineko (both productions by the same studio), name-dropping Kuroshitsuji, making fun of DBZ and Evolution, and ultimately at itself.
Given its clear-cut distinction about its target audience (that is to say, people who understand these jokes – otaku being a large percentage of this), the number of people who could possibly enjoy this show is marginally low (in comparison to other shows that have more mass appeal). I guess you could equate it to masturbation (in a figurative sense, of course) – no meaning, no hidden intention. Just mindless fun and pleasuring oneself. I mean, it’s a show about nothing but jokes on otaku-related works and terms. It’s as meta as an anime could be, really. Whoever said Bakemonogatari was a circle-jerk of a show made for otaku can eat their words – SeiZon is miles ahead in terms of this distinction. This sort of show was made for otaku, period.
However, those people who do fall within its target market may quite enjoy it – as I have. This may sound awfully elitist, but the way the show works, it’s almost like it panders to the people knowledgable about its jokes and references – namely, us. It’s just like going to an IRC channel and watching the people randomly talk about anime; you laugh at some of the jabs and some others just fly right by you. Since the show is essentially a mini-dump of jokes, gags, and references on current shows and other media, I doubt it’s one of those things that people who don’t already know what the show’s talking about will enjoy it.
I hesitate to get pretentious and call it a brilliant social commentary on the current state of otaku media affairs; it could be, but I can’t quite find the words to fully describe how exactly it could. What I can say about it is that for those who like a little bit of pandering for their otaku selves, it won’t fail to satisfy. And I’m quite satisfied, even for just a little while.
Side Note: I was supposed to toss in a nice header image, but fail uni internet won’t let me upload anything. orz

After watching the first episode, I felt kind of proud
Quote | October 8, 2009After watching the first episode, I felt kind of proud because there was only one anime reference I didn’t get. Then I got a little depressed that I was proud of how much of a nerd I am.
w00t. I actually think the adaptation through in more parody
Ryan A | October 8, 2009w00t. I actually think the adaptation through in more parody stuff than the manga. I seriously wonder how this comes out in the light novels though O.o
lol, I used the same IRC analogy in my post.
ETERNAL | October 10, 2009lol, I used the same IRC analogy in my post. I don’t think fan-pandering meta shows like this are bad as long as they don’t take over the industry, and they’re great for people like us

Ryan: I think the SeiZon novels were sort of like journals of them talking about stuff? I don’t remember too well.
ETERNAL: Yeah, this stuff is good once in a while, but I think it’d be the end of anime when the market gets flooded with this. No one but the too-dedicated fan will be able to appreciate them anymore.

Alto50 | October 13, 2009It’s nice to watch an anime that caters to the die-hard audience every once in a while.
Makes you realize, whether it is a good thing or not, that you have been devoted to one thing for a long period of time.
Alto50, most of the references are to pretty recent material
Zeroblade | October 18, 2009Alto50, most of the references are to pretty recent material though, which means a lot of the less-senior people in the anime-watching world (ie: me) can get a lot of the parodies without much background knowledge on other series,
meh. glad you like it. i feel these days there
kgptzac | October 20, 2009meh. glad you like it. i feel these days there are just enough tsukkomi anime and anything too “pure” can’t catch my attention… and probably the other resistance i have is my dislike of harems orz.
but i don;t know. depends on what others might say I probably will read the novel
So I assume you liked it? Glad you liked it.
kirapika | November 13, 2009So I assume you liked it? Glad you liked it. I did too, I wasn’t expecting it to be good because the manga was utter crap.
As far as I’ve seen, I’m practically enjoying it despite all the criticisms this show gets for having its jokes get old to fast. It does but it also tackles a lot of stuff. Like you’ve said, an IRC channel discussion on anime transfigured into a student council meeting.
