Writing About Anime

Re: ghostlightning

While he finds a select number of anime difficult to write about – just about all of them in the list, I would consider to be classics – I find writing about anything to be hard. For some reason, I cannot put out a fully cohesive thought on anything without some sort of rubric or idea of what to write about at all, which is why most of my anime-centric posts end up being simply superficial impression-type posts that display just my surface thoughts on the show. I could have as much difficulty writing about ARIA or Macross (not that I’ve watched the latter) as I do about Saki.
I’ve found that just about everything I try to write up about a show ends up having no actual substance, really. Most posts that turn out as having some substance usually are very emotionally driven (as opposed to analytically driven – I’ll get to this in a subsequent post).
Often a good idea is to go on hiatus for a few months and gain some new perspectives, but I don’t think I’m ready to let go yet – I have a post or two that need typing out before I take my leave of absence from this place.

12 Days, 12 Moments in Anime – Day 12

wonderful ~

Moment #1: Aria

To be specific, the ending of Aria the Animation. Okay, sure, it wasn’t exactly a Christmas setting, but the feelings, the mood it invoked, were the same.
Truth be told, I watched the full series earlier this year, and then the thirteenth episode another time just a few minutes ago, just to keep the feelings a little fresh. It really delivered a simple message to me: No matter what you occasion you’re celebrating, what makes it all worthwhile is being with the people you hold dear. For Akari, it was being with her friends and seniors, Aika, Alice, Alicia, et. al. For me, well, it’s my family and my friends are (though obviously they’re with their own families).
It really hit me hard this year because, if you remember a previous post, my grandmother passed away. She was always there during our family’s Christmas parties, so her absence really drove home that little insight I had.
I just love Aria for things like these. Despite being set so distantly, it still feels so close. The wonderful things I pick up from this show only add to my appreciation of the series, and adding to that, the wonderful, relaxed feeling I always get when watching the show, it makes for a perfect way to celebrate Christmas and the rest of the year.

Buon Natale.

Many thanks to Diego.

And I got a pair of Pioneer SE-M290’s because they were going for cheap. Not too bad, by my standards.

In Anticipation of an Aria

The boxset, that is. Diego’s probably ordered one for each of us already so we now play the waiting game.
As a pre-Aria sort of experience, I went and got myself Aria Volume 3, the latest so far (just published September this year). It’s indeed a very wonderful thing. Also stopped by AniCon 2008. Not really worth going to, but there were less sponsors. That’s cool. And there was a maid cafe (which I couldn’t get into because everyone kept staying for so long). Hit the jump if you care for the long version.

A Quick Title Change

full version of the new banner.

I’ve always had a problem with the blog’s title being “z0mgwtflol”. It felt far too immature for what I currently am right now, and changing the title has been on the back of my mind since about half a year ago. Unfortunately, I never really had anything suitable to change the title to, but as I was reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the perfect title just came to mind – “Life in Quadrant 4″.

What exactly is “Quadrant 4″? While I’m sure those who’ve read the book, at least until the third habit, would know this, I probably should explain it anyway. The book’s third habit is to “Put First Things First” – basically dealing with priorities. These priorities are divided into 4 quadrants: Quadrant 1, the important and urgent matters, Quadrant 2, the important and non-urgent matters, Quadrant 3, the unimportant and urgent matters, and Quadrant 4, the unimportant and non-urgent matters. Because this blog deals with some of the most pointless things in life (yes, anime and manga and all that stuff), as well as my immersion into all said pointless things, I felt that the title would be rather fitting.

Hopefully, this’ll stick for some time so I wouldn’t have to change the title again.
